Mastering Content Repurposing For Social Media: Tips, Tricks, and Examples

Whether you are new to social media content creation or just starting out, I’m sure you’ve heard the term “repurpose content.” The term is pretty self explanatory, it’s when you take a piece of content that you’ve previously created or that already exists and you repurpose it into a fresh piece of content. Mastering the art of repurposing content saves you time, brain power, creative juices and keeps your content more cohesive. But how do you do it? Let’s dive in and I’ll tell you where to find repurpose-able content and examples of how it’s done.

Content that is dying to be repurposed:

  1. Website pages and copy

  2. Static posts

  3. Older posts

  4. Blogs

  5. Email newsletters

Let’s break is down.

Website Pages & Copy

You paid good money to have a great website. The copy is spot-on, the pages are informative and the look totally encompasses your organization. All that content is not just for the web, it’s also for social media. Here’s some examples of showcasing your webpages on social media:

Create a post about the free resources or tools that live on your website.

Create a post highlighting your services.

Create a post highlighting your values, story and history. Bonus if you use pieces of the great website copy or rework the same language a bit for your caption.

Static Posts

Most people get stuck on content creation feeling that they don’t have any new ideas, but many of your ideas are in the content you’ve already created. Attention spans are getting smaller, educational content is getting more bite sized. An easy content repurposing trick is taking a static post that was chock-full of information and turning it into a carousel. Make sure the content you are repurposing is at least six months old, maybe even older if you haven’t been posting very much. Here’s an example of a static post I repurposed into a carousel for a client:

Older Posts

If your audience is continually growing, then your new members likely haven’t seen your older posts. Or sometimes you have content that just went gangbusters or is such valuable information that your audience could use it again. PLUS, you already know it resonates with your audience and will most likely perform well, so win-win.It’s totally okay (in fact most of your favorite content creators do this allll the time) to reuse a post. Don’t be lazy and just post the same thing again. Check the caption and update it with any new and relevant information, consider switching up the image as well. A quick easy way to create content without starting from scratch.

Blogs

Most social media managers wouldn’t call social posts about blogs as repurposing content, but as just another content source. If you are creating content in any form, it can be adapted for social media! Don't let your blogs just live on your website and leave it all to SEO, help boost your blog views by also sharing it on social. You can make a static post with the blog title and a small description with a call to action to read the full blog, you can take the blog content and create an informative carousel or you can take small pieces from the blog and turn it into multiple social media posts!

Email Newsletters

If you share juicy newsletters full of important information you better be moving that content from the inbox to the feed! Remember, your audience members all consume content differently, so it’s okay (and good strategy) to put the same content in multiple places. Maybe your newsletter got pushed to someone’s spam, maybe they read the email and then forgot about the info, you never know. So create less work for you and make your organization’s important information available on multiple platforms by putting your information in multiple places.

Podcasts

If you have a podcast, each episode contains nuggets of inspiration, one-liners, quotes and ideas for content creation. Create a post announcing the episode topic, the guest, etc. Create a post with a pull quote from the episode, create a reel with an audio clip, the possibilities are nearly endless here with one podcast episode creating I bet up to 20 or more post options.

Check out one of my favorite creator’s reel she made promoting one of her podcast episodes here.

Bonus is that when you repurpose content, you often have a CTA in place; visit our website, read our blog, sign up for our newsletter, listen to our podcast, etc.

Repurposing content is key to avoiding content creation and creativity burnout, maintaining a holistic content strategy and keeping your audience informed. Work smarter, not harder my friends.
